The
Maka'ula Tract of
Honaunau State Forest Reserve
The 'O'oma Forest Community Stewardship Project began with a Master
Cooperative Agreement between the TREE Center and the State Division
of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW). The vision was to create a community
forest for Kona, in which residents would be able to access the forest
for learning and enjoyment, and would also have the responsibility
to care for the forest.
Since the inception of the Program, more than 200 students, teachers,
families, and friends have entered the forest to learn, plant, gather,
and enjoy. Over three thousand koa seedlings have been planted. Seed-gathering
of other native species is now underway, and invasive species are
removed. Now, a growing number of youth and adults have developed
a "stake" in the forest and the trees they have planted
there, and from the deep joys they have experienced from having the
opportunity to "make a difference".
The 'O'oma Forest Community Stewardship Project
welcomes additional supporters and friends!
